Crafted For Lasting Luxury
Step by Step: How We Build It
1. The Solid Hardwood Frame
Every Chesterfield begins with its internal skeleton. In our UK workshop, master framemakers cut, glue, dowel, and screw every structural component using solid seasoned beech hardwood. We reinforce every critical load-bearing joint and corner block to ensure uncompromising rigidity. By building without chipboard, MDF, or softwoods, we create a resolute foundation designed to withstand decades of daily use without warping, loosening, or creaking.
2. The High-Tensile Foundation
To create a supportive, whisper-quiet seat, we use a heavy-duty, high-tensile webbed suspension system. Each strap is hand-stretched and interlaced across the hardwood frame to form a uniform, resilient grid. This system distributes weight evenly across the entire seating area, eliminating the squeaks, sagging, and uneven pressure points that can develop in aged metal springs.
3. Structured Comfort & Layered Padding
Over the webbed foundation, we build successive layers of high-resilience, high-density foam wrapped in hand-applied wadding. This meticulous layering provides the signature Chesterfield feel: firm, supportive comfort that cradles the body while holding crisp, architectural lines that never look tired, hollow, or deflated.
4. Master Hand-Pleating & Deep Buttoning
The deep diamond tufting across the back and rolled scroll arms is the hallmark of true upholstery art. Rather than using shallow machine-stamped impressions, a dedicated artisan works directly with the leather, forming each diamond pleat individually by hand. Every button is drawn deep into the hardwood frame using heavy-gauge twine and secured under balanced tension. It requires physical strength, precision, and years of experience to achieve uniform depth and sharp, flawless creases across the hide.
5. Bespoke Tailoring & Individual Hand Studding
Once the deep buttoning is complete, the hide is tailored around the scrolled arms and piped borders with exact tension. To finish the facings, our craftsmen apply individual decorative studs one by one with a specialist hammer. We refuse to cut corners with pre-moulded strip studding on reels; each stud is driven individually into the timber to create an authentic, beautifully spaced line of refined detail.
6. The Final Workshop Inspection
Before any piece is prepared for white-glove delivery, the maker conducts a rigorous multi-point inspection under direct workshop lighting. Every hide surface, diamond pleat, stitch line, stud placement, and timber edge is examined by hand. If a piece does not meet our standard of perfection, it does not leave our floor.
