How We Build a Chesterfield

Every piece that leaves our floor is made by hand, from raw timber to the final stud. Here is how we build them, step by step, right here in our UK workshop.

The Frame

It starts with the skeleton. We cut, glue, dowel, and screw every frame from solid seasoned beech hardwood. We don't use chipboard or flimsy softwoods, and we reinforce every corner joint. A Chesterfield is only as good as the frame underneath it, and ours are built to last a lifetime.

The Foundation

Rather than traditional metal springs that can sag, squeak, or poke through over time, we use a heavy-duty, high-tensile webbed base. Hand-stretched and interlaced across the frame, it creates a taut, uniform support that distributes weight evenly and holds its shape year after year.

The Padding & Filling

Over the webbed foundation, we build up layers of resilient, high-density foam and hand-applied wadding. This gives the sofa its signature profile — supportive enough to sit on for hours, but structured enough to never look tired or sunken.

The Hand-Pleating and Deep Buttoning

This is where the craft really shows. The deep diamond pattern on the back and arms isn’t stamped by a machine. An upholsterer works across each hide by hand, pleating the leather individually and pulling each button deep into the frame with heavy-gauge twine. It takes patience, strength, and decades of muscle memory to get the tension consistent across every fold.

The Tailoring & Hand Studding

Once the body is buttoned, we fit and tension the seat cushions, tailor the scroll arms, and finish the borders. We then apply the individual decorative studs by hand along the facings — tapped in one by one, rather than using cheap strip-studding on a reel.

The Final Inspection

Before anything gets wrapped for delivery, the maker checks the entire piece. Every fold, stitch, stud, and corner is inspected under the workshop lights. If it isn't perfect, it doesn't leave the workshop.

How do I request a return?

Simply send a quick email to our team at admin@luxuryfurniturecollection.com within 14 days of receiving your order.

To help us get things moving smoothly for you, please include your order number, the delivery address, and a few clear, well-lit photos showing the piece's overall condition from a few angles.

Once our team reviews your email and confirms the details, we will provide you with our delivery facility address and instructions so you can coordinate your courier.

What can't be returned?

Because of the specialist work involved, we cannot accept returns on made-to-order pieces. This includes anything crafted to bespoke dimensions, or upholstered in custom fabrics and specialty leathers that we do not typically keep in stock.

Why are returns so rare?

Usually because there is a natural explanation. Genuine, high-grade leather often carries subtle variations, tonal depth, or gentle healed marks—these are the authentic signatures of a real hide, not factory flaws. Brand-new cushions can also feel a little firm at first, needing a couple of weeks of everyday lounging to settle into their true shape and comfort.

Most of the time, a quick conversation and a little advice on care is all it takes, and the sofa happily stays right where it belongs.

That said, we will never try to talk you out of your decision. If a standard piece genuinely is not right for your home, we completely respect that. We simply like to chat with you first in case it is something we can easily explain or help you with.

When will I receive my refund?

As soon as your piece arrives back at our workshop, our master upholsterers will gently inspect it to ensure it is in its original condition.

Once checked and approved, we will process your refund directly back to your original payment card or method. You will receive an email confirmation straight away, and depending on your bank, the funds usually show up in your account within a few working days.
